Social enterprise

Brussels branch comments that the government defines ‘social enterprises’ essentially by reference to non-profit distribution, and has no criteria of ownership or participation. We feel this broad definition may prove weak, and may degenerate into nothing more than CSR. (Examples are Green and Black being sold to Cadbury’s or the Body Shop to Oréal.) The co-operative movement is part of the social enterprise sector that has proved its sustainability for over 160 years because of the way its principles combine materialism with idealism. It is important to continue to assert the importance of ownership and participation in social enterprises.

I think the government should prioritise procurement from, and offer tax breaks to, the social enterprise sector - building societies, John Lewis-style partnerships, community interest companies, and workers’ and consumer co-operatives.

The coop party should be supporting and speaking up for cooperative worker owned enterprise. For years Labour and Coop support social enterprises which are mostly managerialist and non-democratic and mutuals, which are not the same as cooperatives. Currently Coop MPs are supporting Employee Ownership initiatives. Again , these are not cooperatives with democratic equality of rights.

Cooperative worker ownership (worker cooperatives) is difficult because it challenges private ownership and/or bureaucratic control of resources. Hundreds of worker coops in the UK and thousands around the world, some huge, show it is a viable business model. There are exhilerating success stories. Self help by the people!

So come on Coop Party, let’s see you actively supporting proper cooperative worker ownership.

Gordon Brown’s statement that Northern Rock will eventually be returned to the private sector is most disappointing. I am pleased to see that our General Secretary has called for NR to be mutualised, in line with the Conference resolution in September and the excellent open letter by the ICA to the leaders of the G8 nations.
The Party should prepare options for remutualising the nationalised banks, and the POst Office.

I agree with what Bob says - the difficulty of the worker co-op model is not its practicality but its threat to the dominant paradigm of the joint-stock form of ownership, which disempowers workers and disproportionately benefits the super-rich.

Interesting stuff. But what benefits are there to consumers of a workers co-op. From a consumer’s point of view is there any difference between a workers co-op and a capitalist partnership? I would prefer an enterprise to be owned by all of its stakeholders eg consumers and workers alike. This may be a contraversial viewpoint but would be interested in views.

The Co-op Party is dominated by consumer retail societies, which have achieved a great deal. I think at Conference in 2007 one speaker asked for members of agri co-ops to put their hands up, and I think brewers co-ops - no hands shown.

But it would be healthier for the Party and the movement to extend its membership to other types of organisations. I fully support Bob Cannell’s request for the Party supporting workers co-ops.

And as seems apparent from the above contributions, workers co-ops are only one type of organisation. Workers co-ops have many success stories, but there have also been failures. So we need to be helping good practice, and learning from it.

Supporters trusts are another form of organisation that benefit communities. People’s football clubs are very important to them, as Andy Burnham keeps saying. The Co-op Party needs to be encouraging links to trusts, and asking them to affiliate if possible.

If this is not possible under the rules of the party, we need to change the rules - boring to change rules but important to enable a greater _diversity_ of the movement.

I also agree with Toby Johnson’s comments that the government’s definition of “social enterprise” is weak, and avoids the Rochdale Principles. There must be democratic participation from members to ensure proper running of social organisations.

And I agree with _everything_ Chris Richardson says in his Dec 11th post

(if by the Post Office he means the Royal Mail?)

The Co-operative Party should end its affiliation with the Labour Party. Cooperation has a political relevance to today’s problems—notably global warming—which New Labour lacks.

Social Enterprises are split between those which are participative and democratic and those which are managerialist, existing to benefit their managers. All the success stories ar told by Chief executives. It’s self serving propaganda.

Its true that social enterprises are non profit taking but they have no cap on executive salary and social entrepreneurs can pay themselves whatever they think they can get away with. I would have thought we had learned this lesson when consumer society executives thought thmselves independent of their members.

The coop party should make alliance with the democratic wing of the social enterprise movement. They are cooperatives. But expose the ‘fraudsters charter’ which lurks in the model and which will result in misuse of public funds (few social enterprises are genuinely trading businesses) and scandal.

Instead of the state retaining a stake in the Post Office why not hand it over to the workers?

That way the demands of the workers will be heard and they shall have an incentive to improve.

Maybe the law should be changed to make it easier for workers to take over failed firms and run them as co-ops?

Remutulaise Northern Rock! Give Nationwide some real competition.

The co-op party needs to be the advocate in society for social enterprise and ethical business.We need to tell the public there are other business models which have social justice at their centre.

i use a mac, and have never had this problem until one day when i logged on, and realise my username (the one that everyone sees) have been changed to my email address. I thought it was a one time thing so i just changed back again, but the next time i logged on, same thing happened. I haven’t changed any settings whatsoever, it just kinda… happened. My personal message also doesn’t get saved when i log off. Ideas? Thx =]

The virus disabled all of my anti-virus things like McAfee Security Center, Windows Defender, and Malwarebytes then my computer shut down after about 20 popups and the blue screen. I logged back in on safemode, opened hijackthis and deleted three “04″s that I didn’t recognize. When I opened Task Manager “Internet Explorer” or “iexplorer.exe” is running, taking up 66K of memory, but I don’t use internet explorer, I use firefox. So I opened the file location (c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer) and tried to delete them, because I’m sure this is a virus or is infected (am I wrong?) but it says “you need permission to perform this action”. I am the system administrator, and I even tried under cmd to make it so I own it, but it won’t delete. When I “End Process” under Task Manager it reappears in seconds. Is this another virus? If not, how can I make it stop, and get rid of Internet Explorer? Also, Windows Defender is destroyed, for it won’t open. Is there a way to download that again?

I have a HP ZX5000, it will not turn on. When the power button is held down(not simply pressed once) the lightning bolt will light up and all the blue lights will come on, except the hard drive never comes on and neither do the fans. The monitor never turns on. No beep, no boot to bios. Any help? Remember, #1 answer gets 10 points! Thank you.

my kids received a magic jack & a phone (plain regular phone w/ a cord) for christmas. I plugged it in & set it up. It receives and makes calls. However the entire time the phone is plugged in it rings. I cannot get it to stop. The only time it stops is when you dial a phone # or when you answer a call. I have to unplug the phone from the magic jack to stop the ringing. I plugged the phone into my regular landline (cable phone service) and it works just fine with no unneccesary ringing… it only rings when it’s plugged into the magic jack. Is there something wrong with the magic jack? Shouldn’t I be able to leave the phone plugged in without it ringing constantly? I would like to leave the phone plugged in so that we can receive calls, but I cannot deal with the constant ringing. Anyone know how to stop the ringing?

I am currently shopping around for a laptop computer. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about them, but all I know is that I would like to purchase a laptop that is efficient for downloading lots of music, videos, is able to maintain speed while running many programs, and that doesn’t have a short battery life. I have read a lot and not found any solutions. When i type it takes about a 5 second delay per letter to show up. There is currently nothing running and it continues. I just reformatted and have ran 5 virus scans and nothing. I have heard something about stopping PCMservices and that fixing it but i go to startup and it is not there

every time i plug in my charger to my laptop a message pops up and it say ac adapter is not compatable please use a dell 6somthing your system will not charge and be slower but this is the charger that came with the laptop and its still charging????oh and this has been happening since i switched from internet explorer to saffari i dont if that has anything to do with it

I have tried multiple times to open i-Tunes on my computer, and it still won’t work. Other applications (like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word) will open, but i-Tunes will not. How do I fix this problem? Thanks.

So my computer just started freezing for like maybe a month now. Usually it will freeze when im playing a game (Combat arms, and even OMGpop) or watching a video. Twice The Blue Screen of Death popped up on me, but mostly it would just freeze, like everything would just stop and i cant hit any buttons so i have to press down the power button. System memory - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6700 Hard Drive - 1000 GB Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT My computer is a Vista made by hp and its only about 2 years old. Once i think that my fan blew up so i bought it to best buy and had it fix (now my Warranty is up), im also pretty sure its not due to over heating. And Suggestions plz?

Okay, so my laptop is a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC and the graphics card is “383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS with DirectX 10.” I used to be able to play Second Life, vSide, and all these virtual worlds on my computer, but now it won’t let me anymore! I recently by accident was cleaning out my registery and deleted the ‘boot.exe’ file, but now I installed everything back onto my laptop with this new backup installation CD that just came out for my laptop, “HP Upgrade Manager.” So now I am fully upgraded to Windows 7 as well. Why can’t I play these game anymore? It let me before my computer crashed and I installed Windows 7! Does it have to do with installing Windows 7? Or does it have to do with deleting the ‘boot.exe’ file and maybe my laptop forgot to install something onto it when I reinstalled everything with the “HP Upgrade Manager,” CD? (That’s the backup CD I installed to fix my laptop with.) Please help! I want to get back to vSide and Second Life again!

Hi Ok my grandma got a new desktop a few weeks ago, it came with a free trial of McAfee which I installed for her no probs (have it myself at home) She already bought a different antivirus package (Bulldog?) which I was going to install when the McAfee trial was up. Today i opened itunes and noticed that some of my songs wont play. its like they dont exist. If i double click on them it doesn’t do anything. I don’t think I’m losing the monitor, it’s a fairly new laptop designed for Windows XP by Dell. I’m renting to own it and before I’m done paying it off I want to make sure nothing is wrong with it. For some reason while I had windows vista, I started to get blue screens constantly. I than installed windows xp and the computer was a’lot faster but still, I got the blue screens. There are no viruses on my computer. I have a VLC player set as my default. But when I try to convert the files to dvd format and then burn them - in both convert x to dvd and windows dvd maker, both programs say the file type is unsupported and will not open them. I don’t understand because they’re all avi files. I also tried changing my default player and that has not worked either. I’ve been doing this on my old computer for a while, I only started having this trouble with my new laptop.

My mom logged off of my computer and when I later logged back in, the screen was blank. The only alert message that popped up was “Window Explorer has closed”. When I Right click on the Folder it opens the Folder showing all the emails. When I Right click it also shows a drop-down window with choices for New Folder, Rename, Remove, Mark All Read, Empty Spam and Empty Trash. It does not give me an option to Copy. Hello! Everyone I need your help. From previous months, I have been able to play cabal online with norton antivirus on at my Windows Vista and Windows Xp computer. But recently, after norton has been updated, I can n o longer load my cabal online game. Any tips how I can solve this? Hi, i had my laptop about 3 weeks ago and 1 week ago i went to log into my account and after i put my password in and clicked enter it said welcome with the loading icon and just stayed like that. My virus protection was malfunctioning for a short time yesterday, and during that time I got a virus. I believe I’ve gotten rid of it, but I’m now experiencing another problem, which I suspect is some sort of malware that got onto my computer at the same time as the other virus. Trying to figure out what’s going on with my parents’ PC…every so often they can hear a radio broadcast from their PC speakers. Always some infomercial or asian talk show. I’ve tried going through all their running programs, removed the extension cords, disconnected the broadband but you can still hear it. This just started a few months ago. So I got a new computer in the middle of October, it is a Toshiba Satellite A500/040, came with Windows vista Home premium. I got a Windows 7 upgrade disc that is only for my computer. I have upgraded my Laptop to windows 7 and am now having troubles… I think I picked up a few viruses and I am wanting to re-install windows to get my laptop back to normal. The only problem is I am not entirely sure if I can re-use the Upgrade disc. Does anyone know if I can? And if not, what I can do? Okay. So number one problem is I have to type slowly, or my sentences look like this- “elo ow are yo ad wha is going o?” My laptop has touch sensor buttons at the top too that don’t seem to work at ALL. Or the touch pad at all. It’s a dell with vista. I have done virus scans and nothing has came up. I usually use a cordless mouse but it has never affected it before. My computor says it has a virus, and it wants me to download their anti virus software ( which I know is just spyware and is a scam) so I always press cancel. Last night my computer rebooted without warning or explanation. It came back up with everything normal seeming so I assumed it was one of those bastard windows updates. About an hour later I was using firefox and then it stopped responding to clocks. Outside of firefox, a mouseclick was recognized once per item, but no more. Using alt + ctrl + del results in the icon for the system monitor showing up in the tasktray, but nothing more. I could not interact. I rebooted it in safe mode and used system restore to take it to about 3 days back. (I haven’t had any other day work so far and I’ve tried at least 10 different days.) I thought it had fixed it, and I left the computer running all night with no programs open. In the morning, I went to firefox and after about 10 minutes, everything locked again. Rebooted and tried internet explorer with the same result. I just now removed firefox 3.0 and then installed 3.5, but that didn’t change anything. While downloading new nvidia drivers (I suspect that it’s a graphical problem) the system locked again and I just now rebooted. I am very frustrated. Neither AVG nor SpyRemover find any viruses or other malware. They’re both up to date. Part of what is bothering me is that there are no symptoms of viruses or malware outside of this. In some ways, that would almost be preferable. At the moment though, I am stuck, so please do what you can to help. hydroxycut side effects

I suddenly noticed that most files names turned blue in font color in every directory i enter. i can not seem to change it back to black and i do not understand what have caused it. i thought maybe it is a virus or spyware since it happened suddenly, i checked for viruses and spywares/malwares and i could not find anything. I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. I’ve been to all the sites to help out with removing the program however they all request that I change the LAN settings. I do this but seconds later they get automatically changed back. Hi Ok my grandma got a new desktop a few weeks ago, it came with a free trial of McAfee which I installed for her no probs (have it myself at home) She already bought a different antivirus package (Bulldog?) which I was going to install when the McAfee trial was up. Anyway my little brother has been up for xmas and since there’s only a few days of the McAfee trial left thought he would install it now for her. I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed in my HCL laptop. Last month i was encrypting my external hard disk with “bit locker drive encryption”. It started normally, but suddenly after 49%, it stuck, displaying an error: “An error occurred. This disk has one or more errors, run chkdsk/r, if the error persist this may be indicative of a hardware fault…” I then thought to decrypt my data back and to disable the protection. When I tried doing this, after some time my PC hanged and the operation got aborted. When I restarted my system, i found that the disk is not being detected. It is not shown in “computer”, although the disk lights were on. I tried running the hard disk in “Ubuntu OS”, it works there, but all my data is encrypted. My hard disk is absolutely fine and OK. There is no problem with hardware and no virus is there in my PC as well. What to do now? How can i get my data back and how can i decrypt my harddisk? Please help, since this data worths me a lot. So I got a new computer in the middle of October, it is a Toshiba Satellite A500/040, came with Windows vista Home premium. I got a Windows 7 upgrade disc that is only for my computer. I have upgraded my Laptop to windows 7 and am now having troubles… I think I picked up a few viruses and I am wanting to re-install windows to get my laptop back to normal. today a friend downloaded a .txt file on my computer and i later looked at it and it said it was about 8.4mb… which is incredibly large for a text file. i did put it into microsoft word and it said there was about 30,000 pages and roughly 1million words if that helps… but i just don’t know if there could somehow be a keylogger or virus hidden in that .txt file seeing it was so large.. i use firefox, and when to the downloads window and right clicked the original download, but it did not allow me to open the file or open the containing folder… i deleted it off of the downloads window i did a full virus scan on my computer and nothing came up- i also tried to do a system restore but it told me my anti virus program was preventing it from working. i disabled my anti-virus program and tried it again but system restore still didn’t work. i use norton anti-virus. long story short, from the information provided, i would like to know if i could possibly have a keylogger on my computer, how to detect it and how to remove it. thank you very much. cheap hydroxycut

I’ve recently discovered that the a virus (Infopass.Gamestealer to be specific) has somehow made its way onto my flash drive. It is most likely from a computer I share with the other four hundred or so at my school, but I’m unsure how to remove the virus as Norton (Yes, I realize that it’s terrible in terms of virus detection, but it’s all I have.) isn’t detecting it when I scan the drive. Hello everyone, i just installed a new PSU and GPU. I think i hooked everything up fine, then my PC got shut down twice, i thought it was the CPU overheating. I connected the fan in more tightly, that may have been the problem. However, my CPU is having a hard time running basic programs. As Im typing this, my CPU percentage is fluctuating between as low as 10% and as high as 30% or even 60% at times!! Im pretty sure i have no viruses, infact, this issue didnt start happening until i installed the new parts. Is it overheating? BIOS upon bootup says my temps are like 37degrees celsius. Anyone have ideas?

Unless hackers and viruses have turned a new leaf what did I do that fixed my pc. It was glitching every so often the programs would say not responding and have a white film over them I couldn’t do nothing I did the following. Scanned for viruses with Nod 32 scanned with spy bot (found faults) scanned with pc utillities (found faults) I also booted and tryed fixing with the windows cd the final thing I tried was to boot in safe mode which was the last thing I did and it started working so was it the safe mode and the only thing I can see altering is the visual display. did this fix my pc. My friend in Nebraska has asked me to help her with her laptop (i live in AZ ,she used to live here too). She downloaded a bunch of viruses disguised as a virus danger warning from the main OS (ironic huh?) all I know to do is to take it to a computer store like best buy or get a free anti virus software. I renewed my trend micro on september this year, b/c I’ve had it for so long and it nevergave me problems. My computer has detendted so many viruses, and it crashed on me. It was awhile ago when I saw it, but there is apparently something you can download and burn to a disk and it will delete just about everything from your computer to make reformatting easier. Anybody know what the website is? There are missing, necessary files on our desktop or there may have been a virus and now its all screwy. I just got a laptop so was able to transfer all the stuff I needed from the desktop to the laptop, so it’d be better just to reformat since I already have everything backed up here so to speak.

Alright, today it seems like my mom’s computer has a virus attack… so I just try to find a way to fix it, but i can’t, why? BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM IS INFECTED. I found it hard to believe that everything could be infected and thought it was just an antivirus plot for us to buy something. Malware bytes antimalware couldn’t find anything either? Another thing to note, you know that one spyware/malware that tries to perform a fake virus scan in your web browser and tries to get you to buy it? That’s been popping up too.

I don’t know what it is but after i uninstalled a virus it deleted a lot of the scripting for programs to work and now it keeps de-selecting things as i’m doing them. Like i’m trying to play a game and it keeps de-selecting the whole game so it minimizes the entire game and i have to re-click it again, same with firefox, it even tries to close it. It was my sisters old computer, which always worked fine for her but when put it in my room it no longer works properly. Let me start off by saying what actually happens with videos. Whenever a page comes up that has a potential video on it, ones in which you can click a play button, my computer freezes up immediately. I ran a virus scan and there are no viruses. Literally, a second after the page comes up it freezes and the “program is not responding”. It was working fine early today. Trying to figure out what’s going on with my parents’ PC…every so often they can hear a radio broadcast from their PC speakers. Always some infomercial or asian talk show. I’ve tried going through all their running programs, removed the extension cords, disconnected the broadband but you can still hear it. This just started a few months ago. I’ve run virus scans, AdAware, HijackThis, etc. coming up with nothing every time. They haven’t moved and there are no new radio stations in the area, everything has been the same for the last 6 years up until now.

I had the blue screen for so long, I had to reset it and b/c i had no hard drive I lost all my work. I have been trying to get in touch with trend micro but I can’t find a phone that will work. What can I do, I paid worth a year, and already uninstalled it on november, and evr since my computer works way better. I want my refund but I cant seem to get in touch with anyone.

I do a system restore or reboot, whatever its called? Because I do virus scans, I cleaned out any unwanted programs and it is still slow! I was thinking if I restored my computer back to the “out of box” state it will make it faster? I know i’ll lose everything but thats the whole point.

I am running Windows XP SP3 and am connected to the internet through a Comcast modem and Belkin router. It says my internet connection is excellent and this problem does not occur on the other laptop in the house. I have tried many things and there are no viruses or firewall problems. I decided to run IE’s diagnostic thing. It said there was some problem, that I was told could be solved by using Winsock XP Fix (because whenever IE tried to fix it, it claimed it fixed it and to restart my computer, but then when I would restart, the problem would still occur and be detected). After using Winsock XP Fix, the problem stopped for a few hours, but is now back again and this program does not solve it anymore. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Ok, Norton picked up a few viruses on my computer called JS.SecurityToolFraud and a few others which Norton didn’t give names (They Were Trojans) too. Now Norton Says it got rid of these viruses and i need too take no action. Then i got a notice saying something along the lines of ” A seciruty risk appeared, no futher action needed. Then i got the same notice after about 15 minutes. So Norton hasn’t got rid off it, is there anyways i can ensure that the viruses and the trojans Ps. I think the Trojans name was .dropper or something like that, Norton is still running fine, Internet links from google lead me too ad sites. Had to type this in too the bar at the top. Computer running slow.

I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. When it freezes I have to turn it off witut shutting it down. It also wouldn’t freeze right away..it freezes into about 10 minutes of playing the DVD. It was also making weird noises when it froze. Best Buy informed me that the noise wasn’t any hardware issue, but the kind of noise the computer makes when it’s frozen. They said nothing was wrong hardware wise, and that I had 6 viruses on the laptop. Well now, all those viruses are removed, and my laptop is still skipping and freezing when I play DVDs..to the point where I have to turn off the computer without shutting it down. Also, now it freezes and makes a weird noises when I’m not playing any audio. If it’s not viruses, and geek squad said everything is fine with the computer physically, then what is it?

I’m looking for a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive for my Dell Vostro 1520. The 250GB I have only runs in Safe Mode because of a virus I can’t remove. I want an external hard drive so I can take the 750GB and put it in my laptop, install Windows on it and then put my 250GB into the external enclosure and copy all my files to the 750GB. What is the cheapest one to get?
